Tesla Adjusts Cybertruck Production Team at US Factory to Make Way for Model Y
According to three factory workers cited by Business Insider on January 9th, Tesla is adjusting its Cybertruck production team at the Austin Gigafactory in the United States, transferring some employees to the Model Y production line.
The background of this personnel shift is a rare decline in Tesla's annual delivery volume. In 2024, Tesla delivered approximately 1.79 million vehicles, a decrease of about 1% from the previous year.
In response to this situation, some employees originally belonging to the Cybertruck production team have been reassigned to the production tasks of Model Y. Model Y has always been Tesla's main model and the best-selling vehicle.
An internal survey showed that Tesla notified employees in December about the adjustment of production plans for Cybertruck and Model Y, and sought their job preferences. The survey mentioned: "As we adjust our production plans to better meet business needs, the schedules for Model Y and Cyber will change, and we hope to consider your opinions."
According to two employees, adjusting the production plans of existing models is not common, and such changes usually only occur on the production lines of new models. They also revealed that they learned in meetings with supervisors that the size of the Cybertruck team will be reduced in the first quarter of 2025, and the company will reduce the production of parts for this model.
Three employees confirmed that these adjustments are expected to take effect next Monday. An employee at the Austin Gigafactory mentioned that most employees want to stay on the Cybertruck team, but some employees are still forced to change positions. This employee believes that the reason for the transfer may be related to the higher profit margin of Model Y.
As of the time of writing, Tesla has not made any public comments on this matter.
Since its launch at the end of 2023, the market demand for Cybertruck has been questioned. Although there were reports before the launch that Cybertruck had reservations as high as 2 million, Tesla's data as of the end of 2024 shows that the delivery volume of this car is far below expectations.
Tesla has not disclosed specific sales data for Cybertruck, but the company's statistics show that the total delivery volume of Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck in 2024 was 85,133. According to a government document in October, the delivery volume of Cybertruck for that year was approximately 27,000.
