Tesla Shanghai Factory to Start Mass Production of Revised Model Y Next Month, Adjustments to Interior/Exterior and Battery Capacity

Reports from 'Late Point Auto' yesterday stated that the next two 'new cars' from Tesla's Shanghai factory will both be Model Ys. One is the revised Model Y that will go into mass production next month, similar to the refreshed Model 3, with changes to interior and exterior design, battery capacity, motor performance, and autopilot suite based on the current model. The other is a 6-seater Model Y, expected to be delivered in Q4 of next year.

Last month, several bloggers revealed that Tesla's new Model Y has already been co-produced with the old model at the Shanghai Gigafactory, confirming a launch in January 2025.

According to previous reports, there was news yesterday that Tesla's Vice President of Manufacturing and Shanghai factory director, Song Gang, had submitted his resignation months ago, with December 18th (Wednesday) being his last working day. Two informed sources said that Song Gang plans to join a local emerging car brand that is currently facing production bottlenecks. The most likely successor to Song Gang is Tesla Shanghai factory's Senior Director of Automotive and Parts Quality, Fei Wenjin. Another candidate is Sun Hao Lin, the current Logistics Director at Tesla Shanghai factory.

The early manufacturing team of Tesla's Shanghai factory mostly came from SAIC General Motors and SAIC Volkswagen. They built the world's most efficient electric vehicle factory in just three years. During Tesla's Texas factory expansion in 2023, Tesla dispatched hundreds of workers and engineers from the Shanghai factory to the United States to assist with production ramp-up. These individuals returned to China with Zhu Xiaotong in April during Tesla's major reshuffle this year.
