Stellantis Italian Plant Private Car Production Plunges 46%, Hits 68-Year Low

Reuters reported on January 3rd that car manufacturer Stellantis' Italian plant production plummeted by 37% in 2024, with car production reaching the lowest point since 1956 (the past 68 years), causing industry concerns.

The FIM-CISL union stated that Stellantis, formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and French Peugeot Citroën (PSA-Peugeot) in 2021, produced 475,090 vehicles in Italy in 2024, down from 751,384 in 2023, a year-on-year decrease of 37%.

Citing media reports, car production plunged 46%, reaching the lowest level since 1956, with commercial vehicle production also down by 17%. Turin Mirafiori plant production dropped by 70%, and the Modena Maserati plant production plummeted by 79%, causing concern.

Stellantis currently relies on state-funded temporary layoff plans to address overcapacity. The company plans to launch new models from 2026 to boost production. Stellantis has committed to investing 2 billion euros (approximately 2.1 billion US dollars) in the production of new models at Italian plants by 2025.
