Tesla Model 3 Sedan Awarded 5-Star Green NCAP Rating for 'Excellent Environmental Performance'

Green NCAP is an independent environmental vehicle testing program aimed at assessing the energy efficiency and environmental performance of cars. Initiated by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), it analyzes vehicles' emissions, energy consumption, and overall ecological impact under real-world conditions through comprehensive laboratory and on-road tests. Green NCAP uses a star rating system, with a maximum of five stars, where a higher star rating indicates better environmental performance.

The testing is divided into three main indicators: Clean Air Index (assessing pollutant emissions), Energy Efficiency Index (measuring vehicle energy utilization), and Greenhouse Gas Index (calculating emissions of CO₂ and other gases). Electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and conventional internal combustion engine vehicles can all participate in the tests to ensure a fair comparison of vehicles with different power systems.

Tesla has released the Green NCAP data for its Model 3 sedan Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version, which achieved a 5-star rating with an average score of 98%. Green NCAP hailed it as a pride for Tesla engineers and one of the most energy-efficient vehicles they have tested.

In standard laboratory tests, the Model 3's energy consumption in cold and warm environments is 15.2 kWh/100 km and 14.8 kWh/100 km, respectively, which is one of the lowest recorded by Green NCAP.

On-road tests showed even lower energy consumption for the Model 3, at 14.2 kWh/100 km, while setting a new record of 20.8 kWh/100 km in high-speed tests.

As a pure electric vehicle, the Model 3's greenhouse gas emissions mainly come from the upstream stages of electricity supply. In laboratory tests, its greenhouse gas emissions are approximately 43 grams CO2 equivalent/km, increasing to 76 grams CO2 equivalent/km in cold environment tests.
