Tesla Model 3 Performance Tops 'Most American-Made' Car List: 87.5% Domestic Parts
Tesla has outperformed traditional American automotive giants Ford and General Motors to become the champion of the 'Most American-Made' car. According to the latest ranking released by Kogod School of Business, Tesla's performance on the 'Made in USA' index is far ahead.
The study by Kogod School of Business assessed the proportion of parts in American-made cars that are sourced from the United States and Canada. According to the American Automobile Labeling Act (AALA), car manufacturers are required to report the proportion of North American parts, but do not distinguish between American and Canadian sources.
Tesla Model 3 Performance topped the list with 87.5% domestic parts. Following closely are the Tesla Model Y Long Range and the base Model Y, both with 85% domestic parts. Tesla's electric pickup Cybertruck ranked third with 82.5%, while the Model S and Model X tied for fourth place with 80%.
Traditional automakers saw the Ford Mustang GT and GT Premium tie with Tesla's Model S and Model X at 80% domestic parts. The Honda Passport AWD and Passport Trailsport ranked fifth with 76.5%, followed by the patriotic Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Sahara at 76%. The Volkswagen ID.4 AWD, GMC Canyon AT4 Crew Cab, and three Chevrolet Colorado models also made the list with 75.5%.
Although Tesla has a strong presence on the list, its 'Made in USA' halo is not without blemish. Study author Frank DuBois pointed out that Tesla still heavily relies on Chinese parts. For example, the second-ranked Model 3 Long Range has a Chinese parts proportion of up to 40%, excluding the motor and battery, while the Cybertruck has a 20% figure, mainly concentrated in seats, dashboards, etc.
