SAIC Volkswagen Plans 'Counterattack' on Domestic Market by 2026: Developing Three New Cars with Technologies from XPeng, IM Motors, and Roewe
According to a report by Auto Pixel, SAIC Volkswagen plans to 'counterattack' the domestic market in 2026 with three indigenously developed new cars.
The three cars, internally coded A, B, and C, include one pure electric vehicle and two hybrid models, all of which are 'exclusive' to the Chinese market. As planned, the three cars will be launched in 2026, marking the year with the densest new product releases in SAIC Volkswagen's 40-year history.
Car A and Car B are provided by SAIC Group, with the SAIC Research and Development Institute participating in the development. Car A is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedan, modified from the already launched Roewe D7. Car B is an extended-range SUV, targeting the mid-to-high-end market, and is modified based on an upcoming car from IM Motors that has not yet been released.
Car C is a pure electric SUV, positioned similarly to BYD Yuan. This car is supported by Volkswagen, with Volkswagen Technology Center (VCTC) participating in the development, using the CEA electronic and electrical architecture, which is the vehicle architecture provided by XPeng to Volkswagen. The CEA architecture largely follows XPeng's own EEA architecture, with a more centralized electronic and electrical layout, facilitating software iteration.
As previously reported, on July 22nd, XPeng Motors announced the signing of a strategic cooperation joint development agreement for electronic and electrical architecture technology with the Volkswagen Group. Both parties will fully commit to developing an industry-leading electronic and electrical architecture for Volkswagen's CMP and MEB platforms produced in China.
The report states that the three new products from different technology providers will all carry the Volkswagen VW logo, rather than adopting a new brand strategy.
