Hyundai Ioniq 5 Sets Record for Maximum Altitude Change in Electric Vehicles, Crossing 5800 Meters in Height

According to a report by Carscoops on December 27, Hyundai Ioniq 5 has set a new record for the maximum altitude change in electric vehicles. This feat was organized by Hyundai Motor India, with the Ioniq 5 successfully descending 19035 feet (approximately 5802 meters).

The challenge began at the highest drivable point in India — Umling La in Ladakh, Leh, at an altitude of 19025 feet (about 5799 meters). Then, the Ioniq 5 traversed rugged terrain, after a two-week journey, eventually reaching Kuttanad in Kerala, which is 9.8 feet (about 3 meters) below sea level.

Although Hyundai did not disclose the number of charging sessions in detail, based on the EPA estimate for the US version of the Ioniq 5, the vehicle's maximum range is 318 miles (approximately 512 kilometers), which means at least ten charging sessions were required to complete this challenge, though the actual number may be higher.

While Hyundai did not reveal much about the specific details of this record-setting vehicle, the 2025 Ioniq 5 has undergone exterior and technological upgrades, equipped with a stronger battery and a new NACS interface. Additionally, the XRT model features a more off-road style appearance, with a unique front design and "digital camouflage" accents, as well as a higher chassis and all-terrain tires.
